It’s time to communicate better
Every time I tentatively propose this idea in conversation - that
business people need to communicate better
- my friends nod their heads and exclaim
Yes! That is so true.
This blog and, from now on, my business are about just that: better communication.
For me, all communication, whatever the context, can be made better by applying these three principles:
-
The most effective communication is two way: conversation not broadcast, listening as well as speaking.
-
Conversation is more than idle chatter: to show respect for those with whom we communicate and to gain value from the conversation for ourselves, we must be able to make our point clearly and memorably.
-
To do so, we must make best use of communication tools: in person, that might be what we say or how use our body language; on the podium, that might be the words we use or the design of our slides; online, that might be the content of our website or its accessibility or usability.
In business, I want to help my clients put those principles into action. My role may be consultative or more hands on. I might coach a client to blog, or write content myself; I might work with a client to write and rehearse a presentation, or design the accompanying slides; I might build a full website or simply help my client select a website developer.
I have worked in these areas before, both for money and for fun. Now I believe it is time to tie those activities together under the banner of
better communication.
Wish me luck.
